The first event for the 2007-08 season kicked off with plenty of wind at Hawks Nest. John Pearce led the all new FE+ racing with Sean O’Brien taking out the overall event followed by Brett Morris and Sam Parker. Check out all the action below with 3 photo galleries, report and the full results…

Good question:
Slalom results are seperate, as they will became one result of the “NSW Slalom Championship 2007-08″

Formula and Slalom results are combined as they will become one result of the “NSW Windurfing Series”

Formula results are not a seperate category. That Title is covered by the “NSW FW Championship” 12-13Jan08.

Hope this makes sense?….

Really really doesn’t make sense……

So … within the Series

#1. one result for Slalom
“NSW Slalom Championship 2007-08″

#2. No result for Formula, possibly titled
“NSW Formula Championship 2007-08″

#3. one result for Overall
“NSW Windsurfing Series 07-08″
………..

How can a formula result (that doesn’t exist) be rolled over into an overall title “NSW Windsurfing series”?

I think what Brett meant is… there is no separate formula result because its included in the overall series… to explain:

There’s a one-off event (NSW Formula Championships) which would decide the formula champion for the season. Back in the day we also had a one-off event which was the NSW Slalom Championships - however the premise of getting perfect slalom conditions on ONE designated weekend is usually not possible… and we’ve had a lot of lousy “slalom” bias weekends as a result of trying to hold a championships…

So the slalom championships was changed to the combined result of all the slalom events for the season.

The Overall NSW Champion is (and has always been) chosen by the overall winner of all 8 heats (with slalom and formula combined into an “overall” event result - rather than separate divisions for formula and slalom).

So yes, it would be great to have sepate slalom and formula champion at the end of the season, but I think its too many prizes and too many divisions/results etc, as well as making it harder to manage at the beach when there’s the decision to stick with formula or change over to slalom. The system we have now is the same as last year I believe.

Does that make sense of it??

What’s the problem with having lots of classes and trophies. I would suggest more classes and trophies until eventually there are so many even I win one.

And while I am whingeing, I would like to complain about Rick. He spent the whole w/end without swearing (at least as far as I heard) or complaining. He was even heard to be pleasant & witty on at least one occaision. What is the world coming to, is there nothing we can rely on.

Still doesn’t make sense

Simply, case in point, Formula and Slalom are different classes.

Considering we spend six months of the year competing in either class and spend a lot of money on formula equipment, formula deserves it own results.

I agree with Nathan. Formula and Slalom are different classes and should not have combined results for a particular event. Every event should list Formula and Slalom results seperately. At the end of the season we would then have a Series winner for Formula, a winner for Slalom, and a combined “Overall series winner”.
The NSW Formula Championship should decide the “NSW Formula Champion”.

However…. The Notice of Series does clearly state..

1/ TITLES:
NSW WINDSURFING SERIES, 2007-08
NSW SLALOM CHAMPIONSHIP 2007-08
NSW SPEED CHAMPION 2007-08

No mention of Formula at all. I believe it is inferred that NSW WINDSURFING SERIES, 2007-08 is the Formula comp, but that is my subjective interpretation.

Perhaps next season we could have..
TITLES:
STORM-RIDERS FORMULA WINDSURFING SERIES, 2008-09 (Based on the aggregated results of all Formula races)
NSW SLALOM CHAMPIONSHIP 2008-09 (Based on the aggregated results of all Slalom races)
STORM-RIDERS OVERALL SERIES CHAMPION 2008-09 (Based on the aggregated results of all Formula and Slalom races)

I do feel that the majority of sailors go to these events for the Formula racing and the published results should reflect that. (26 people raced Slalom at HN, 38 raced Formula).

The NSW Windsurfing Series, has always been a combination result of slalom and Course/Formula racing. It was never meant as a single discipline series. This is to reflect the best overall sailor will win the series.

The seperate Slalom result(NSW Slalom Champion) was only introduced in the last few years afer there had been a couple of seasons where the NSW Slalom Championship run over one weekend, had no result because of not enough wind.

There will always be competitors who have a slant towards Formula, and conversely sailors who have a slant towards Slalom, you cannot keep everyone happy all of the time. Again, this is a test of the best overall sailor.

Introducing another seperate catergory would mean the person who does the results would have to score another 5 categories each event, and at the end of the season, another 15 trophies to be presented, on top of the close to 40 inividual class results already awarded. This is not as easy or as simple as it looks.

I’m sure Brett would be more then happy to hand off the event scoring to somebody else if they want to calculate more individual class results for each event.

The series did segregate FW, Slalom, Speed, Race-boards, and the the overall winner (FW+Slalom) a few years ago, but it became a results and shear volume of trophies/Prizes logistical nightmare.
Historically every competitor has participated in both course and slalom racing, so combined results for an event was more “natural” (if you like). That said, it really does look like FW has jumped to new participation levels this season, especially with the success of FE+, so separate results should reflect the strength of the class.
This is a really positive and encouraging issue to be considered, especially since only one heat has been completed, and there is a opportunity to the N.O.Series.
The only point worth remembering is that if disciplines change from FW to Slalom, exclusive FW racers will have to be accept a “Time out” from racing. Great feed back. Cheers

I can not see the logic of having separate slalom results, and then combined slalom/formula results.

The trophies aspect is a red herring - I believe people want to see a formula result - not receive a formula trophy!

The results for all racing disciplines were amended 2 days after the request was made, 6th of October…
Pretty efficient I thought?
N.O.Series is being reworked.

Separate Slalom results = NSW Slalom Championship
Combined FW & Slalom = NSW Windsurfing Series

With the successful launch of FE+ and new people with only FW equipment, there is for the 1st time a real demand for FW result only. This is a great development and we have and are continuing to respond.
