Heat 6 @ Lake Macquarie

Heat 6 @ Lake Macquarie

Heat 6 brought some rain, a little more rain and then a LOT more rain; oh, and some windsurfing. Results were close in the top spots, with only 3.25 points separating 2nd to 5th. Results are below however we have no photos due to the rain :-(

  1. 20-30Kts Easterlies all weekend. We are jinxed at Valentine by the looks of things.

Not Happy Jan. What is wrong with 10-15Kts from any direction at all?

OH well – I had best go see if I can appropriate a car for the weekend.

    See you all tomorrow,

    IRL131

  4. I bet Brett’s ready for Slalom….. ; )

  5. Guys, If anyone is asking how to get in contact with me regarding Formula fins, Please do not give out my work email address, I’ve had to get the moderators to remove it the Star-Board Forum this week.

    Use this email address instead

    Thanks

    Chris

  6. Sorry Chris, WOOF.

  7. Careful what you wish for John as it might just f-in happen.

  8. Jaybee,
I was meaning the 10-15 from any direction you wished for and we got on the Sunday. In re-reading it did sound a bit harsh but nothing intended.

    All the best,

    Sam.

  9. Ps. I think Brett has the results sheets with him so when he’s back tomorrow we should get the results online. Going to be interesting to see who’s 2nd-4th – I think it will be a close one!

Sadly, the photo of Muzz rigging up his slalom gear on Sunday wasn’t taken :-(

  10. i am back from HK and about to attack the results….Going to be some interesting reading….. Racing was very close on Saturday, i imagine only a few points separating 2nd-7th

  11. Forget about 2nd – 7th, its the race for last or second last where the real tension is.

  12. You want tension. We better hope none of those Flying 11 girls want to race Formula, State Fling 11 Championship. Top ten. And yes they have results on their web site http://www.flying11.yachting.org.au

  13. Could definitely do with more girls in the fleet. Might be a bit young though :-/

    Ps. The results are up!!

  14. Me no understand……….which races got canned?

  15. Races, in order of how they were scored.

    SATURDAY
    Race 1 – counted
    Race 2 – counted
    Race 3 – counted
Race 4 – abandoned, due to incorrect start sequence (and some girls being over the line by miles)
Race 4 – counted (re-run of previous abandoned race)

    SUNDAY
Race 5 – abandoned, due to lack of wind

So only 4 races counted for the weekend.

  16. if you flick Race 5 you should filck Race 4. We were plaining more in Race 5 then we were in Race 4. Alot more people pulled out of Race 4 than Race 5. Then I guess not every one sailed in Race 5.

  17. Wasnt race 3 the one with the mucked up start sequence? And race 4 was the last one of the day saturday? So only 3 races from Saturday counted?

  18. Who cares about which race should count and which should not…

The big debate is which rules are we using now-
    * 2009-2012
    * 2004-2008 rules

Sailing instructions say “will be governed by the current ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing”.

    Hence should be the 2009-2012.

If we are using the 2009-2012 rules then there are no drops for 4 races…

PS: I don’t care as michael still beats me even though I beat him in 3 races…

PSS: Sean would really care as he would have to carry a DNS.

  19. Steve,

You should be more worried about your next fin, where it will come from, will it be a dud. Does not pay to use a VMG beat the VMG fin man. On that basis my next fin will be a beauty.

Was a strange weekend. Worst weather ever but when the wind was in it was really nice saling. Of course the parking was a problem. I don’t like being so far from Rick’s van. Maybe that is why Rick went worse than usual, the walk to the water was too long. He should really arrive a bit earlier to get the good spot.

  20. Definitely a strange weekend, it is amazing how something as natural as rain can make a weekend feel and run so much differently, but that is what keeps it interesting huh..
Race 3 was canceled and re=run due to a 20sec mistake in the start sequence. the 4minute flag was dropped 20sec late due to the start watching failing…It was nothing to do with wind levels.
There was still flags on the 4min, 3min & 1min, where competitors could recalibrate their start sequence, but unfortunately it only takes one person to start 20sec early and the race needs to be re-run.
Scoring in this series is 1 drop every 4 races. Easy and has been this way for over 5yrs… Probably a good idea if i organise a set of sailing instructions at the next event, so the new people don’t get confused when they check the results…

Only 2 events to go and the 2008/09 season is over…Man, where did summer go?…

  21. Steve,
You will be surprised to know……… BUT it is not all about you.

  22. Dead right Rick, it is not all about Stephen. We know it is all about me, me, me, me.

And – it was not a strange weekend, it was a beautiful weekend, the likes of which we should have more of. If only every weekend was like that, the world would indeed be a better place.

Good news – I just checked Seabreeze, it might rain on Sunday. Keep your umbrellas close.

    John

  23. In regards to R5 vs R4 being flicked/not flicked. According to my dad on the beach, and the start-boat, in R5 on Sunday, more than 50% of the fleet were off the plane for over 3.5 mins at one point in that race. (And no comments about ‘my dad’ just doing it, cause I won the race and would’ve LOVED TO HAVE KEPT IT ;) )

Although we don’t use the 50% rule in the sailing instructions, if the wind goes below 7 knots during the race (which it did; measured on the boat) it is up to the starter’s “discretion” to abandon a race. The difference on Saturday with the final race was, that whereby probably 50% of the fleet didn’t plane “at some point”, they did not all come off the plane at the same time. And the 50% rule was basically the measure they were using to come up with their discretionary decision to abandon it.

Not that it matters now, but just so you guys know what the process is for abandoning a race due to light winds.

For the record, the Formula international rules this year will be ammended to use the 2005-2008 RRS drops system (ie, drops on 4, 7, 11 etc) instead of the crazy new rules. So we are running under the current FW rules right??

  24. I could not see any thing about minimum wind strength or 50% of the fleet not planing in the 2009-2012 rules.

My understanding of the 2009-2012 rules is if place finishes with in the time limit then the race cannot be abandoned.

I like this rule as it is simple to follow, with no judgment calls!

PS.On Sunday only Gary had the class maximum 12.5 sail size up, most of the fleet did not even have there largest sail up!

  25. Thanks Sean for explaining all that.
Can you also explain all the recent photos of all the new style of hats people are wearing in the heat event photos? eg Nathan Bowness,Ben Morell etc.

  26. STEVE
DO I REALLY HAVE TO SAY IT AGAIN!!

  27. Steve,

Check point 3 in the Sailing Instructions (in the info menu, above). Although they probably don’t go into specifics in the new (or old) RRS, the rules we run under are the RRS except when modified by the NOR or the SI’s.

From the SI’s: “The sole judge as to suitable conditions for racing to commence and or to continue and the course to be sailed will be the principal race officer (alters FRR 91.5 and 91.8).”

ie, the race crew make the call. I just wanted to explain that they don’t just “make up” the call, they base it on some old rules (ie, the 50% rule) which used to be in place as a guide.

Rick, you and I both know the wearing of hats is quite geigh. I cannot explain any of it …

  28. In regard to the race on Sunday, the principal race officer discussed the prevailing wind condition with me over the radio a number of times before the decision was taken to abandon the race.

Some facts that can be supported by AUS120 GPS track: race started at 13:57:18 .. first finisher 14:21:16 .. elapsed time = 23:58 minutes. I now refer to SI 13.3 Time Limit – Formula/Raceboards is 20 minutes. The principal race officer made the correct decision. QED as we use to say when I was a boy at school.

It is important to read all the SI not only those that may give an individual an advantage.

During the Oceanics in Jan, the principal race officer was often faced with a decision on suitable race conditions. Brian frequently consulted with me as I had a better view on the hill with my binoculars; I believe between the two of us we got it right most times.

  29. Don’t let this one simmer down Steve as it makes for great reading!

  30. Hey Brett,
Sean says I should direct my question about hats to you.

Can you explain all the recent photos of all the new style of hats people are wearing ( rigs on heads )on the Stormriders home page, heat 5, 6 and 7. eg Nathan Bowness,Ben Morell etc.

  31. It’s rigs at the front and boards in the background.

John O’brien is wearing a board in the photo featuring Nathan, and Brett is wearing his board in the photo where Ben is featuring.

  32. I only “just” got what Rick was talking about earlier today …

Brett, I think the request was about more ‘on water’ windsurfing photos. hahahaha.

I’m still sticking to my guns that that’s me in the photo wearing my dad’s hat. Pretty sure I wouldn’t have asked my dad to carry the board up the beach after he slaved all day as the beach-manager :-/
