NSW Windsurfing Series – Heat 7
The last southern event for the season took place at Jervis Bay over the weekend with plenty of racing action including 8 formula and 3 slalom races over the two days. Sean O’Brien took out both the slalom and formula with 9 wins out of 11 races ahead of Byron McIllveen and Brett Morris. This result puts Brett Morris ahead of Steve Floyd for the overall series on a countback. The results for this event are below as well as the Overall Series Pointscore for 2009-10 season. There will be a small delay with the photos due to upgrades to the website…. stay tuned.

any happy snaps from heat 6?
I don’t think we got any photos from Heat 6?
Angela Nelson has given us a bunch of great photos from Heat 7 however we’re doing some upgrades to the website (due to the bandwidth issues we’ve had) so they won’t be online for a little bit …
I’m pretty sure Tam uploaded some heat 6 photos to the server?
Ok guys, forget about happy snaps or who won or came second this is more important.
Tibor & I are on level points in the series with him beating me 4 out of 7 times. I have the best result (a 7th) so how do they decide the count back? I need to know now as things may go downhill in heat 8.
How good is that. I came last or 2nd last in 8 FW races but beat him in heat 7 overall because of the slalom. There is a god & he loves slalom.
I did look at the notice of series. I think it means the one who gets the lowest heat score wins the countback & if they both get the same lowest score then the winner is the one who got that score most times. The wording is a bit strange so I thought I would seek a better opinion before heaping shit on Tibor. And you must admit it is a bit hard to believe.

Yes Bruce, you are correct. You should be placed above Tibor, that was my mistake.
If your results are placed in order you have the highest result, so under the rules for this series you win the tie. This is exactly how Brett is ahead of Steve – They both have the same number of firsts, but Brett has 2 seconds while Steve only has 1.
I thought I had split all the ties correctly, but obviously I was mistaken.
J
Thats right Bruce you should be in front of Tibor on your count back.
If Brett is in front of Steve on their count back , you should be in front of Tibor in yours.
We have 2 sets of rules in play here.
Goodness gracious!….don`t you all love this! You should all be ashamed doing this to your grandfather! pussies!
Ok my turn…
What’s going on with the scoring when we do a combination of slalom and formula in a weekend?
Would have thought the result would have been the combination of the slalom and formula racing for the weekend. Ie 11 races with 2 drops.
Not as is with results from 8 formula races (2 drops) and 3 slalom races (NO drops) being added together.
Have a look at the method results were calculated for heat1 2007. http://www.storm-riders.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/nsw-windsurfing-series-heat-1-8.xls
Have the rules changed since then??
This is a much fairer way!
Method used this year is not fair as potentially 1 slalom race has the same weighting as 9 formula races. And allows for fairer drops. (Especially for the guys that don’t race slalom)
Are the results being calculated correctly?
What do you think we should do for this year?
What about next year?
Thanks
Steven.
Thanks for going in to bat for me Steve, the cheques in the mail. Dont wish to take away from the excellent efforts of the many who organise and run the events but this scoring method does seem slalom biased..oh well…Heat 7 was brilliant….the highlight for me was being greeted at the waters edge by Bretts’ kids announcing “Our dad beat you”.
Worth the $30 alone
Overall Results Questions…
Why do we combine the results to get a Heat winner?
The NOS says that “Eligible competitors shall score points towards the series point score on the basis of their finishing position at each individual heat.”
This implies that we need to establish a single “finishing position” for each competitor in each Heat.
Why is this result the result used for the overall series calculations?
The NOS says “The competitor with the lowest combined score for the slalom and formula will be the “NSW Windsurfing Series” winner.”
The implication here is that we must “combine the scores” (not the results) from each discipline to establish the “finishing position” that carries forward. (as above)
Specific Heat 7 questions…
Why has the scoring changed?
The SI’s and NOR were rewritten during the off-season to address scoring issues we encountered last season. This is why last seasons scoring system is different to this seasons. This has been the situation all season, and Heat 4 was scored as Heat 7.
Why were slalom races not discarded?
Because the SI’s stipulate “one discard for every four races completed in each discipline”. This means no discard for Slalom in Heat 7 because there were only 3 races completed.
Point of Note for anyone who may end up tied in the overall standings after Heat 8.
NOR says – “If there is a tie then the winner of the last race that both competitors races against each other will determine the result.”
I have never seen this type of tie breaker in action, but it does have some very exciting strategic implications.
Is this system perfect – probably not, we can revisit them during the off season.
If anyone has any further questions, I can be contacted at johnbhurley *at* hotmail (dot) com, or on my mobile.
I take it Brett’s kids got you on Sunday Ben?
Hey Ben. don’t worry my kids love to remind me after every race that i can’t beat Sean.
Ps, Couldn’t help but notice you beating me to the 1st mark a couple of times during the weekend…Great to see how far you have come so quickly….
Apparently Scarlett was almost in tears with the thought that her Dad might not win a trophy. Rachel unsuccessfully tried to explain to her about divisions etc!
Watch out anyone that gets in Brett’s way at Hawks Nest – you will have to deal with the wrath of Scarlett!
just noticed something interesting – at Heat 4 we had twice the slalom races to the number of formula races and the same scoring was used – so you could argue that unfavourable biased formula in that instance
net result – ‘even stevens’!? or ‘even brett’s??
if they are still even after heat 8 can we have a beyond thunderdome finale?? 2 men enter one man leaves?? maybe it can be a red vodka fire engine challenge, befitting of hawks nest!
