McGain Back to His Roots

Former PWA World Champion and current PWA Chairman Phil McGain returns to race in Australia this summer in the much anticipated East Coast Formula Triple Crown events which include the NSW Championships in Belmont (11-12 Jan.), Sail Melbourne (15-17 Jan.) and the Australian Formula Championships in Hobart (19-23 Jan.). Phil who has been competing internationally since 1985 on the professional World Circuit decided to plan a trip to Aust around the 3 events in January.

Phil McGain comments- "It’s been a while since I’ve raced back home, but I’ve spend many a weekend at Belmont sailing back in the early 80’s with the Wylie Brothers. I’m looking forward to mixing it up with the local boys and hopefully showing them what I’ve learned the past 15 years".

Formula windsurfing has taken off in the last 3 years internationally and is starting to create a lot of interest in Australia with the much developing events this summer. Formula windsurfing consists of using one board, 3 sails and 3 fins during the competition so it makes for a more level playing field for all competitors.

Phil McGain has recently competed in the Formula Class World Championships in Germany where he placed 5th overall and won the Masters division for the third straight year. Phil also has been elected on the International Formula class committee along with fellow Australian Ian Fox (President of the Australian Windsurfing Association), who is currently spear heading the growth of Formula Windsurfing in Australia.

Ian says- "We are pleased someone of Phil’s caliber can come and race with us down under, it really shows that things are taking off again on the Australian racing scene. Phil will no doubt create a whole new level of sailing at the events this summer, he’s one worlds leading windsurfing technician’s and still has what it takes to be the very best on the race course".
